In August 2024, one of the pros of Dancing With the Stars was arrested for domestic violence in California. Less than two weeks later, his estranged wife filed for divorce.
Artem Chigvintsev has not yet been charged related to his domestic violence arrest, but the case highlights the complexities of domestic violence and the dissolution of a marriage. For those facing criminal charges, the stakes can be even higher.

Missteps
Less than a month after celebrating their second anniversary and complimenting each other on social media, Artem Chigvintsev and Nikki Garcia are headed for divorce. In their divorce petitions, both list the date Chigvintsev was arrested for domestic violence as the end date for their marriage.
Chigvintsev and Garcia (better known as Nikki Bella to WWE fans) share a son. While Bella has requested full custody, Chigvintsev wants the former couple to share custody.
In addition, Chigvintsev wants Garcia to pay his alimony and his attorney fees. Garcia, on the other hand, wants the court to terminate both party's right to spousal support. How and when the former couple resolve these differences remains to be seen.
Domestic Violence and Custody
Even if Chigvintsev is charged and found guilty of domestic violence, that doesn't automatically end his right to custody of their son. That someone has been charged with domestic violence doesn't mean they're a threat to children or the neighborhood, but courts will consider that possibility during any custody hearings.
Anyone charged with domestic violence shouldn't assume they'll escape more serious repercussions. If a spouse takes out of a Protection From Abuse order (PFA), a court may award them temporary full custody. They may limit or restrict the other parent's access to the child for visitation.
Domestic Violence and Employment
While the Fall 2024 season of Dancing With the Stars does feature an ankle monitor, individuals shouldn't view what happens in a reality dancing competition as equivalent to what happens in most workplaces. For most workers, a domestic violence allegation can hurt their careers.
Being charged or convicted of domestic violence carries a stigma. Even if not convicted, being accused of domestic violence can harm a person's reputation. Some jobs require background checks, and a domestic violence conviction may limit employment opportunities.
A domestic violence check may limit a person's ability to get a professional license in the future. Those who already have professional licenses may face disciplinary action or license suspension as a result of domestic violence.
Protect Your Future
Domestic violence can happen to anyone. What happens after a domestic violence incident can vary. Some may choose to ignore it. Others may file for divorce and a PFA.
How someone accused of domestic violence responds can dramatically affect the outcome for them. Individuals accused of domestic violence need help and support in understanding and navigating the legal process.
