Dean of Students Charged With Domestic Violence for 'Excessive' Discipline Incident

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | May 08, 2024 | 0 Comments

Liberty Township Police in Ohio charged the Dean of Students at Youngstown City Schools with domestic violence after he was caught on video allegedly slapping his daughter and slamming her onto the hood of a car. Law enforcement served Chivas Whipple, who is also a basketball coach at a local high school, with a temporary protection order and must stay away from his daughter. His employer also placed him on leave. Whipple told police he was disciplining his daughter for allegedly lying to him about her whereabouts that evening. But police said his confrontation was "excessive in nature," explaining there's a difference between discipline and abuse.

Pennsylvania Lawmakers Take Domestic Violence Charges Seriously

Children are the lights of our lives. But there's no doubt they can get on your last nerve. Tempers can heat up quickly, especially with hormonal teenagers in the house. But if you lose your cool with your child in this day and age, where video cameras are rampant, your actions may be taken out of context.

Several actions are considered domestic violence under Pennsylvania law, including:

  • Domestic assault
  • Domestic Endangering the welfare of children
  • Child abuse
  • Stalking
  • Criminal trespass
  • Harassment
  • Violation of protective order
  • Sexual assault
  • Kidnapping
  • Homicide

Laws giving special consideration to acts of domestic violence are intended to protect the victim. Unfortunately, law enforcement often doles out false and exaggerated charges of domestic violence in volatile situations without considering all the evidence or circumstances. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding your domestic violence charge in Pennsylvania, you should ensure your rights are protected.
