Houston Rockets Star Facing Domestic Violence Charges
In September, police arrested Porter in New York City for an alleged assault against his girlfriend that left her with a fractured neck vertebra and a deep laceration over her eye. In court, the Assistant District Attorney stated that Porter has a history of domestic violence, including hitting her car with his. Porter did not enter a plea at his September 12, 2023, arraignment, but the court ordered him to stay away from his girlfriend after posting $75,000 bail. He originally faced charges of second-degree assault and strangulation. But prosecutors dropped the strangulation charge at his October 16, 2023, hearing, acknowledging that he did not break his girlfriend's neck and there was “insufficient evidence” to support the charge.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver weighed in on the allegations in September, calling them “horrific.” However, he cautioned that the NBA needs time to determine what happened before acting, particularly since the incident happened in the off-season. He told The Messenger, “One thing I've learned over many years of working on these cases is not to assume anything here, to not just rely on headlines, but to try to truly understand what's happening here. We're still now in the process of gathering information.” Silver also stated, “We have a bit of time to decide whether it will be appropriate for him to go to training camp or not.”
Domestic Violence and Your Career
Despite Silver's plea for caution, people often make judgments as soon as domestic violence charges become public knowledge. In the wake of the domestic violence charges, Porter is already facing a massive career dust-up. On October 17, 2023, the Rockets announced they would trade Porter to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Houston will trade Porter and two future draft picks to the Thunder in exchange for Victor Oladipo and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl. However, Porter won't play for Oklahoma. Instead, the team plans to immediately waive him and pay the remaining $16.9 million on his contract.
