Lawsuit Brought Against Jay-Z and Sean Combs for Rape
A civil lawsuit originally filed against rapper Sean Combs (also known as P. Diddy, among other names) was recently amended to add Shawn Carter, better known as Jay-Z, as a defendant. Both are accused in the lawsuit of raping the then-13-year-old plaintiff at an afterparty following the 2000 Video Music Awards. Both Carter and Combs have denied the allegations in the press. While neither has been criminally charged in connection with the alleged rape discussed in the civil complaint, Combs has been jailed pending trial on other racketeering, sex trafficking, and related federal charges.

The Lawsuit Against Carter and Combs
As noted above, both Carter and Combs have been sued for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl at an afterparty following the 2000 Video Music Awards. The lawsuit was originally filed against Combs and companies related to Combs in October of 2024; it was amended in December of 2024 to add Carter.
The amended complaint states that Carter was identified in the original complaint only as “Celebrity A.” It further states that the plaintiff’s attorney offered to mediate the matter with Carter, but that he responded by “filing an utterly frivolous lawsuit” and “by also orchestrating a conspiracy of harassment, bullying and intimidation against Plaintiff’s lawyers, their families, employees and former associates in an attempt to silence Plaintiff” from naming Carter as a defendant in the lawsuit.
Carter has filed a motion asking the court to deny the plaintiff’s request to proceed anonymously or, in the alternative, to dismiss the lawsuit. In the motion, Carter argues that the attorney who represents the plaintiff “has a history of targeting celebrities by making false allegations of misconduct,” and that Carter had himself recently sued the attorney in California for “extortion and intentional infliction of emotional distress” based on the lawyer’s earlier contacts with Carter. The motion also argues that the plaintiff, who would now be 37 years old, “has not carried her burden to show that she is entitled” to proceed anonymously.
Aside from Carter’s motion, neither Carter nor Combs has formally responded to the amended complaint.
The Plaintiff Gives an Interview
In mid-December 2024, the plaintiff in the case gave an interview to NBC, though neither the woman nor NBC revealed the woman’s name. In that interview, she acknowledged that there were some “inconsistencies” in her allegations and that she had “made some mistakes” in her recollections of what occurred that evening.
The same day the interview aired and was widely reported, Carter’s attorney filed a letter motion with the Court arguing that the interview “outs plaintiff’s allegations for what they are: a sham.” The letter indicated that Carter’s attorney would be filing a new motion to dismiss the case, and asked the Court to expedite the resolution of that motion. The motion was filed on December 18, 2024 and as of this writing has not been resolved. It asks the Court to “Strike the Complaint and Dismiss Mr. Carter From This Action.”
