Man Faces Felony Drug Charges for Selling Cocaine Out of Delta Upsilon Frat House in State College

Last month, a Pittsburgh man was arrested and charged with selling cocaine out of a Delta Upsilon fraternity house in State College, PA. The man, 22-year-old Thomas M. Robinson of Allegheny County, had previously sold cocaine to confidential police informants from the frat house over a 3-month period.

A search of his room led to the discovery of cocaine, amphetamine pills, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a .45 caliber gun. During his arrest, Thomas, who assumed his fellow fraternity brothers were pranking him, initially resisted arrest, leading to him being tased by the police. He was arraigned on 23 drug-related charges, 13 of which are felonies, as well as a five-count felony charge of criminally using a communication facility.

In Pennsylvania, drug possession with intent to sell or deliver is considered a felony. Consequences of Drug Charges in Pennsylvania

Penalties for drug-related arrests are governed by the Pennsylvania Controlled Substance, Drug, Device, and Cosmetic Act. This law covers everything from drug schedule classification to jail terms.

A drug possession, trafficking, or possession with intent to deliver charge often means you're potentially facing a devastating and life-altering event. If convicted of these crimes, the penalties can be severe and are often linked to the gravity of the allegation.

Depending on whether the defendant is charged with a misdemeanor or a felony, penalties for drug charges often range from fines (up to $250,000) to prison sentences (up to 15 years for each count). This is why you should be proactive about your defense if you've been arrested on drug-related charges.

Steps to Take if You're Arrested on Drug Charges in Pennsylvania

Once arrested, you'll be read your Miranda Rights. During this period, say nothing and instead contact an experienced criminal law attorney. The first thing your attorney will do is see if you can be released on bail.

For instance, after Mr. Robinson's arrest and arraignment, he was able to get out on bail and go about his life pending his hearing. The experienced Criminal Defense Team at the LLF Law Firm can work to help you obtain early release from jail while building your case.

The court may appoint a public defender to take on your case. You cannot take chances with a court-appointed public defender for serious cases such as possession of controlled substances or other related drug charges. Public defenders often have a ton of cases to work through and may not give your case the attention it deserves.

Instead, let our Criminal Defense Team at the LLF Law Firm help you build your case, brainstorm a solid customized defense strategy, and fight for your freedom.
