District Attorney Cited Multiple Reasons for Dropping Case
Despite mounting an exhaustive investigation into the allegations against Warner, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office opted not to file charges for several reasons. District Attorney Nathan Hochman offered insight into why they were dropping the case in a press release, which stated, “We have determined that allegations of domestic violence fall outside of the statute of limitations, and we cannot prove charges of sexual assault beyond a reasonable doubt.”
DA Hochman's statement also praised the “courage and resilience” of the women who made the allegations against Warner and thanked them for their cooperation throughout the investigation. The investigation was somewhat compromised by the age of the allegations and the fact that Hochman's team inherited the case after he was elected to replace the former District Attorney George Gascon.
Accusers in the Case Were Also Well-Known
The allegations against Warner made international news not just because of his fame but also because his accusers were very well-known. Neither the District Attorney's office nor the LAPD released the accuser's names, but two came forward and identified themselves. One of them is actor Evan Rachel Wood, who is perhaps most well-known for her role in the HBO show Westworld.
Their relationship raised eyebrows because Warner was 38 and Wood was 19. They were engaged for a short time in 2010 before their relationship fizzled out. Wood's statement accused Warner of grooming her as a teenager and subjecting her to years of abuse. Warner's other accuser is Esme Bianco, who shot to fame on the HBO drama “Game of Thrones.” She came forward at a rally for Hochman during his election campaign.
Wood and Bianco were not Warner's only accusers, but they were the only ones who came forward and made their accusations public. Warner's attorney, Harold King, released a statement expressing satisfaction with the District Attorney's decision not to file charges. King also steadfastly asserted his client's innocence.
