Pennsylvania Men Arrested for Gift Card Scam

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Dec 14, 2024 | 0 Comments

Two Pennsylvania men have been arrested in Bucks County for orchestrating a string of gift card scams at local Giant Stores. Law enforcement claims that nearly 100 gift cards from local stores were tampered with as part of the men's scheme and that they had stolen over $3,100.

What Gift Card Scheme Were These Men Running?

The two men were participating in a type of gift card scam called "card draining." Card draining works by thieves removing gift cards from the store and then recording the unique identifying information from the gift card. Once this information is obtained, the thieves return the gift cards to the store racks, where they are sold to unsuspecting customers. When the cards are purchased and loaded with money, thieves can redeem the money on the card with the recipient, but they are none the wiser until they use the card themselves.

Pennsylvania Law Enforcement is Taking Gift Card Scams Seriously

The man's arrest is hardly the only one in Pennsylvania in 2024 for gift card scamming. In August, the Carlisle Police Department responded to a report of gift card scammers posing as law enforcement agents with ICE and the Carlisle Police Department. The scammers demanded that the victim pay for fake warrants for their arrest in gift cards, requesting that the victim purchase several gift cards and provide the associated numbers over the phone.

Chester County residents found themselves at the center of another gift card draining scheme back in June 2024. Law enforcement also made arrests in that case where gift cards located in Giant food stores were also the target.

Pennsylvania law enforcement isn't turning a blind eye to gift card scams any time soon. If recent enforcement is any indication, they will certainly be on the lookout for gift card scammers this holiday season.
