Parish Funds Used for Candy Crush and Other Games
According to the criminal complaint, in July 2022, the Chester County District Attorney's Office informed the Pennsylvania State Police of a possible theft. The Chester County District Attorney's Office learned of the alleged theft from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, which found that Father Kozak supposedly took a large amount of parish funds over roughly two years.
During a routine audit, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia found 2,183 “gaming” transactions totaling $40,879.00 for mobile games such as Candy Crush Saga, Cash Frenzy, Mario Kart Tour, and Pokémon Go. The audit also found that Father Kozak partially paid $10,600.00 for these credit card charges, presumably using his own money.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia provided this information, as well as documentation, to the Pennsylvania State Police. Further investigation also found that Father Kozak may have used parish funds for a tablet, school backpack, and a kid's science kit for his goddaughter.
When interviewed by the Pennsylvania State Police, Father Kozak acknowledged playing games on his phone but that he wasn't gambling but was, instead, “powering up.” Father Kozak said he wasn't a “details guy” and that he may have made those purchases on accident because he didn't realize his purchases were going on his parish's credit card instead of his personal bank card.
Criminal Charges Against Father Kozak
Based on the investigation, the Pennsylvania State Police arrested Father Kozak. After his arrest, Father Kozak faces three charges: theft by unlawful taking, access device fraud, and theft by failure to make the required disposition of funds. He posted bail and was released.
Facing Criminal Theft or Fraud Charges in Pennsylvania?
It's unclear what Father Kozak knew or intended when he charged the parish credit card for those mobile video games and gifts. It's also uncertain if he had any mental health concerns that might explain his actions. This is why it's so important to obtain legal counsel when facing the possibility of fraud and theft charges.
