School Staff Member Charged With Sexual Contact Resigns

Licensed professionals—whether they are teachers or work in other industries—are subject to two sets of lawful codes: the typical criminal code and the code of conduct related to their license. Unfortunately, when allegations arise in the courtroom, individuals will also face a grievance process from licensing boards. If you or a loved one is facing criminal charges or disciplinary action on their professional license, call the LLF Law Firm at 888-535-3686 now or visit our confidential online consultation form.

Licensed Educator Charged With Student Sexual Contact

A former staff member and girls' wrestling coach at Central Dauphin East High School has been accused of having inappropriate contact with three students. Lower Paxton Township Police officials state they received reports indicating the above on March 29, covering three male victims, all minors. During the investigation, Emily Rajis, a 27-year-old paraprofessional at the school and coach, admitted to having sexual intercourse with two students and identified a third student whom she allegedly had a sexual relationship with outside of school, but the student denied the connection.

Rajis was later arrested by police, arraigned, and had bail set at $50,000. She is charged with the following:

  • Three felony counts of sexual contact with a student.
  • Two felony counts of unlawful contact with a minor.
  • One felony count of corruption of minors.
  • One misdemeanor count of corruption of minors.

Rajis was placed on administrative leave when the allegations arose but has since resigned from her faculty position. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 28.

Consequences for Licensed School Professionals

While the Lower Paxton Township Police and local courts adjudicate the former school employee's charges, there are additional procedures from the state she will face. Rajis was licensed to work in Pennsylvania schools, and her alleged behavior will be subject to an investigation by the Pennsylvania State Board of Education.

Part of a licensure agreement for most, if not all, certified professionals states that licensees are subject to board disciplinary action following substantiated instances of criminal or civil action. Even though Rajis resigned from her position, it is likely that she will face license suspension or revocation, but only after the board follows through with charges, notifying Rajis, and scheduling a hearing.
