Philadelphia Domestic Violence Reports Rose by Nearly 30% in December 2022

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Jan 18, 2023 | 0 Comments

While the holidays are a time to come together with family and friends, they can also easily take a toll on relationships when the added stress, exhaustion, and financial pressure mount. The dinners, travel plans, gift-giving expectations, family time, interactions with in-laws, and added stress from often having more work to complete while children are also home from school can easily create high tensions. There may also be excess drinking at family and office parties throughout the season, heightening tempers. Despite our best efforts, the holidays often can bring out the most stressed-out and exhausted versions of ourselves.

With all of these complexities at play, it's not a surprise that Domestic Violence reports often increase during the holiday season. This past year, for example, the Philadelphia Domestic Violence Helpline reported a 30% increase in reports. The story goes on to further describe two hair-raising incidents. On November 30, 2022, officers in the Lawndale area responded to reports that a man had decapitated his wife in what was described as a “house of horrors.” Later, on December 19, 2022, Lansdale officers confirmed that a man had fatally shot his wife before taking his own life. Fortunately, the couple's two-year-old triplets were physically unharmed during the violent exchange.

It goes without saying that most domestic violence calls are not as severe as these incidents. Spouses, partners, and even children can call the hotline before disagreements escalate to the point of violence. Sometimes, if the spouse or partner is drinking and escalating the argument themselves, they may misinterpret the situation and call the police or the domestic violence hotline despite being placed in no actual harm. If you are facing domestic violence charges from incidents reported over the holidays, you are not alone.
