It's an isolating situation to fulfill career responsibilities when you are wrongly accused of violating a restraining order—known in Pennsylvania as a Protection from Abuse Order (PFA). No one is immune to that possibility, including Pennsylvania State Representative Kevin Boyle. When he was wrongfully accused of violating a PFA, the House of Representatives attempted to oust him on the basis of the accusation.

Personal and Political Turmoil for Boyle
Representative Boyle, who hails from a family entrenched in politics, has established a lengthy political career. After a videotape emerged of public conduct suggesting intoxication, Boyle was denied access to the Capitol and removed from duties as a committee chairman. As a result, Boyle has had to cast his votes remotely. At the same time, he was also facing an unrelated arrest warrant for violating a PFA order. Boyle's opponents used the opportunity to attempt a political ouster and secure a majority, couching their goals in broad proposals about addressing and evaluating a member's mental and physical fitness for duty.
Protection From Abuse Orders
A PFA is a court-approved maneuver to protect a close association from abuse. PFAs are only issued for spouses, current or previous intimate partners, and family members. Three years ago, Representative Boyle returned to his wife's home and was subsequently charged with harassment for violating the terms of a PFA based on a non-violent domestic situation. An arrest warrant was issued; it was while that warrant was still open that Representative Boyle cast his remote House session vote. As an immediate threat to his career, including his current political post and the upcoming primary contest, his job-related rights to the House and his own committee were thwarted. Once it was determined that the PFA in question was not in effect and the arrest warrant had been issued based on incorrect information, the district attorney's office dropped the harassment charges and canceled the warrant.
