Even Lauren Boebert Deserves to be Presumed Innocent

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Feb 26, 2024 | 0 Comments

Being wrongfully accused of a crime is an incredibly frustrating, frightening, and embarrassing experience. But, even someone in the news as frequently as Colorado Congressional Representative Lauren Boebert deserves to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

If you have been accused of abuse or another offense you did not do, we can help. Call the LLF Law Firm Criminal Defense Team at 888-535-3686 today or contact us online

What Happened

In early January, Rep. Boebert's ex-husband, Jayson Boebert, told police the Congressional Representative had punched him in the face when they were both in a Colorado restaurant called The Miner's Claim. Rep. Boebert denied the accusations, and the restaurant did not have any surveillance video of the incident. When no witnesses came forward to collaborate Jayson Boebert's accusations, he recanted, and the police closed their investigation into Rep. Boebert.

Jayson Boebert was then arrested for third-degree criminal trespass, obstruction, and disorderly conduct due to his actions in the restaurant on the same occasion. Though it is not clear what exactly happened in the restaurant that day, Lauren Boebert released a statement saying that she did not punch him in the face and saying, “I will be consulting with my lawyer about the false claims he made against me and evaluate all of my legal options.”

Lingering Scars

Though the swift resolution appears to vindicate Rep. Boebert, just the accusation of abuse can harm someone's reputation and inflict emotional damage. For someone in the public eye or holding elected office, being accused of abuse can even mean damage to their livelihood.

What Happens in Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, if you have been wrongfully accused of assault or domestic violence, you are entitled to secure your own legal representation, and you may be able to get Protection from Abuse (PFA) Orders, a type of restraining order that can stop your alleged abuser from behaving in a certain way, and may help you limit the damage to your reputation.

Help Is Available

While domestic violence is a serious issue, and allegations should always be taken seriously, we must also recognize the potential for false accusations and ensure that everyone, regardless of their position or political affiliation, receives due process and a fair chance to defend themselves. Lauren Boebert is hardly the first, nor will she be the last, person in an influential position who has allegations weaponized against her.

If you have similarly been accused of something you did not do by someone who is looking to embarrass you or hurt your career, you don't have to just stay quiet. The LLF Law Firm Criminal Defense Team can help. Call us at 888-535-3686 today or contact us online
