It's no secret that domestic violence is a growing problem, both in Pennsylvania and across the country. A recent study demonstrated just how dire the situation is becoming, however. More stories and data about domestic violence coming out leads to stricter domestic violence laws and even partners who feel they can get away with false domestic violence claims.

Domestic Violence May Be Linked to Restricted Abortion
A study released by the American College of Surgeons in early February showed that pregnant women living in states with limited access to abortion may experience higher rates of domestic violence. The study looked at data from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS), analyzing homicides that occurred between 2018-2020, before Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022.
The study found that between 2018-2020, 500 women aged 12-50 were killed by an intimate partner during pregnancy. States categorized as “restrictive to abortion” at this time had a 75% higher rate of homicide during pregnancy. When the researchers looked at homicides of men in the same age range and with the same state-based categories, they didn't see the same trends.
Intimate Partner Violence Is a Serious Problem
Unfortunately, domestic violence remains a big issue in Pennsylvania and across the U.S. As more data is gathered and more light is shone on domestic violence, more laws and restrictions are put in place. Policymakers are rightly concerned about the safety of the victims, but too much emphasis on their protection could lead to gaps in the rights of the accused. Some people end up getting charged with domestic violence when, in reality, they didn't break the law. After a fight or a disagreement, your intimate partner might try to take revenge by reporting you for domestic violence, and until the charges are proven, you are under a temporary Protection from Abuse order.
