A sign language interpreter at Shenandoah Valley Junior/Senior High School in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, is facing multiple felony counts for repeated sexual relations with two high school students. Kimberly Rae McIntyre, aged thirty-two, is charged with institutional sexual assault, corruption of minors and intercourse/sexual contact with a school student, statuary sexual assault, and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse w/someone less than sixteen. She is also charged with misdemeanor indecent assault of a person under sixteen. In interviews with police, one student victim described a series of conversations and encounters with McIntyre that escalated over time to the two engaging in sexual relations. Penalties for a conviction of a charge of institutional sexual assault alone include a fine of up to $15,000 and a prison sentence of up to seven years.

Pennsylvania Laws Regarding Sexual Crimes Against Children

There are many laws in Pennsylvania that encompass sexual crimes against children, although some define the age range as ending at sixteen and others at eighteen. A charge of statutory sexual assault, for example, can result if someone who is at least nineteen years old has sexual intercourse with a person who is under the age of sixteen, even if the contact is consensual. Charges of sexual abuse of children apply in cases where a person is involved in creating, distributing, or viewing pornography involving a child under the age of eighteen. In addition to incarceration and financial penalties, convictions for any child sex crimes often include registration as a sex offender for periods of fifteen years, twenty-five years, or life.

The LLF Law Firm Criminal Defense Team Can Help You if You Are Charged With Child Sexual Crimes in Pennsylvania

While a conviction for any felony charge can result in heavy penalties when the crime is related to a child, the defendant will be hard-pressed to find leniency or sympathy, and the reputational effects of the conviction, even years after time has been served will likely linger, especially if registering as a sex offender is among the penalties.
